Throw It On Back Thursday: “We Shall Be Free” in light of Charlottesville

I haven’t posted a “Throw It On Back Thursday” in a while but with everything that has happened this past week, I thought a post might be appropriate. There is one country song in particular that has been on my mind since seeing the news stories filled with images of white nationalists and neo-Nazis marching through the city of my birth- Charlottesville, Virginia. That song is Garth Brooks’ “We Shall Be Free” from 1992.

Since Garth Brooks doesn’t post his videos on on YouTube (and he’s also not on Spotify or Apple Music, though he is on Amazon Music), I’ve posted the lyrics below. If you are able to find this song and listen to it, I would definitely recommend it (maybe even blast it on a boombox the next time those Nazi idiots start to rally). If you are unable to listen to it, just reading the lyrics will do the trick of conveying the song’s message.

There is one line in particular that stands out to me, especially in regards to the events that took place over the weekend in Charlottesville- “when there’s only one race and that’s mankind, then we shall be free.” Until we stop judging people by what’s on the outside and start looking at what’s on the inside, we can’t be free. As Garth also sings, “When the last thing we notice is the color of skin, And the first thing we look for is the beauty within” only then can we be free!

When there's only one race, and that's mankind, we shall be free.

Garth Brooks- “We Shall Be Free”

This ain’t comin’ from no prophet
Just an ordinary man
When I close my eyes I see
The way this world shall be
When we all walk hand in hand

When the last child cries for a crust of bread
When the last man dies for just words that he said
When there’s shelter over the poorest head
We shall be free

When the last thing we notice is the color of skin
And the first thing we look for is the beauty within
When the skies and the oceans are clean again
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud
‘Cause we shall be free
When we’re free to love anyone we choose
When this world’s big enough for all different views
When we all can worship from our own kind of pew
Then we shall be free
We shall be free

We shall be free
Have a little faith
Hold out
‘Cause we shall be free

And when money talks for the very last time
And nobody walks a step behind
When there’s only one race and that’s mankind
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud, have a little faith, hold out
We shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, have a little faith

We shall be free

This is why Garth is the G.O.A.T.! Time to dig out my Double Live album and pop it in (it’s usually always in my car but I recently brought all my CDs in)!

I wanna give a shout out to all the country artists that have been tweeting and speaking out against the horrific events that happened in Charlottesville. Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne, Margo Price, Wheeler Walker, Jr., Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell- I see y’all!

Currently listening to: Garth Brooks- “People Loving People.” Another great Garth song about people coming together!

“People loving people
That’s the enemy of everything that’s evil
Ain’t no quick fix at the end of a needle
It’s just people loving people”
